| Acrobat Distiller 4 PDF Instructions |
| Adobe PDF is the ideal file format if everything is set up properly.
The PDF format eliminates most Postscript problems and automatically includes all the fonts and files we need, while giving you a means of previewing your job before sending the file.
If you have Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4 please follow the following setup information.
This document is available as a PDF in the 'documents' area.

Step1
Set up your application files according to the instructions in the file setup area. Print your file to disk from your layout application using the Acrobat Distiller PPD as your target printer. Print as a composite file, not pre-separated.
All images should be uncompressed CMYK eps files to avoid any resampling by the layout program and any JPEG artifacts when the images are later compressed in Distiller.
Maintain all Pantone colors as spot colors to ensure accurate reproduction.
Allow a large enough printer page size to include any needed bleeds and crop marks.
Step2
Process your Postscript file in Acrobat Distiller 4 according to the following preferences:
|
|
| Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4 Job Settings: General
It is extremely important to select Acrobat 3.0 as your compatibility level.
Do not select ASCII format as this will create files that are twice as large.
The resolution setting will have no effect on images.
|
|
 |
| Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4 Job Settings: Compression
Do not select any downsampling or upsampling in Distiller as the interpolation method is far from perfect. Your CMYK images should already be at the proper resolution when placed in your document. If you do not have images of the necessary resolution please indicate this on your order form and we will increase the dpi in the appropriate software where possible.
Select ZIP/JPEG compression for all images.
N.B. The settings in Distiller 4 are the inverse of those in Photoshop. i.e. Low=Highest Quality.

Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4 Job Settings:
Font Embedding
Choose to embed complete versions of all fonts to eliminate late-night phone calls about missing fonts, and enable us to make those last minute spelling corrections. Subset all fonts below 99% to insure that YOUR fonts are the ones that will be used to RIP the file.
|
|
 |
| Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4 Job Settings: Advanced
Distill using prologue.ps / epilogue.ps to prevent spot colors being converted to process. To make these files available move them from the High_end folder where they were originally installed to the same folder as Distiller.
Do not perform any RGB to CMYK conversions here as the results will be unpredictable.

 |
|
Step 3
Preview your file in Adobe Acrobat Exchange / Reader to be certain everything worked properly.
Step 4
To minimize any unpleasant file transfer corruption, stuff the PDF as a self-extracting archive (.sea or .zip) along with your order form. If you wish you may password protect the archive, just don't forget to tell us the password.
Step 5
To send the file to our upload site, select "Upload Files" from the menu on the left.
