Acrobat Distiller 5 PDF Instructions
Adobe PDF is the ideal file format if everything is set up properly.

The PDF format eliminates most Postscript problems and automatically includes all the fonts and files we need, while giving you a means of previewing your job before sending the file.

The most reliable means of producing press ready PDF files is using Adobe Acrobat Distiller. Acrobat Distiller produces PDF's from a PostScript file generated by your originating application (Xpress, InDesign, Corel etc...). Please follow the instructions below exactly to ensure that you have the proper options selected in Distiller.

This document is available as a PDF in the 'documents' area.

Step1 - Produce a PostScript File

Set up your application files according to the instructions in the file setup area.

All images should be uncompressed CMYK eps files to avoid any resampling by the layout program and any JPEG artifacts when the images are later compressed in Distiller.

Maintain all Pantone colors as spot colors to ensure accurate reproduction.

Produce a Postscript file from your application by selecting Acrobat Distiller as your printer and printing the file to disk as if you were printing to a high resolution imagesetter.

DO NOT use Acrobat PDFwriter!

Please print all files as composite color. DO NOT print as separations.

Paper size should be set to the final ad size plus a 1.25 cm (.5") margin for image bleeds and crop marks.

Please see the Adobe website for detailed instructions on producing optimised Postscript files from your particular application.

Step2 - Distill Using Acrobat

Process your Postscript file in Acrobat Distiller 5 according to the following preferences:

Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5 Job Option Settings

Open Acrobat Distiller, select 'Press' in the 'Job Options' pop-up menu then select 'Job Options' from the Settings menu.

Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5 General Settings

In the 'Job Options' window, select the 'General' tab and set the options exactly as per the screen-dump below.

The 'Default Page Size' setting has no effect on the PDF file produced as you have already selected the proper page size in your application.

Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5 Compression Settings

In the 'Job Options' window, select the 'Compression' tab and set the options exactly as per the screen-dump below.

Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5 Fonts Settings

In the 'Job Options' window, select the 'Fonts' tab and set the options exactly as per the screen-dump below.

Choose to embed complete versions of all fonts to eliminate late-night phone calls about missing fonts, and enable us to make those last minute spelling corrections. Subset all fonts below 99% to insure that YOUR fonts are the ones that will be used to RIP the file.

Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5 Color Settings

In the 'Job Options' window, select the 'Color' tab and set the options exactly as per the screen-dump below.

Color conversion should not be needed as all your images should already be CMYK.

Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5 Advanced Settings

In the 'Job Options' window, select the 'Advanced' tab and set the options exactly as per the screen-dump below.

Step 3 - Save the modified settings

In the 'Job Options' window, select 'Save As' and save the new option settings as 'Koloriste'.

'Koloriste' will now appear in your Job Options List.

Step 4 - Process the Postscript File

Select 'Koloriste' in the 'Job Options' pop-up menu in the main Distiller window.

Select 'Open' from the file menu to begin processing your Postscript file

Step 5 - Verify the PDF

Preview your file in Adobe Acrobat Reader to be certain everything worked properly.

Step 6 - Compress

To minimize any unpleasant file transfer corruption, stuff the PDF as a self-extracting archive (.sea or .zip) along with your order form. If you wish you may password protect the archive, just don't forget to tell us the password.

Step 7 - Upload

To send the file to our upload site, select "Upload Files" from the menu on the left.
